Ray Pritchard once addressed the excuses we sometimes make for not memorizing scripture. He said…“suppose that Bill Gates came into the sanctuary with a 50-gallon drum filled with crisp, clean $100 bills. And suppose he offered $100 for each verse anyone memorized by next Sunday?” We would immediately have men and women, boys and girls who would figure out a way to memorize 100 verses by the next Sunday!
In reality, God’s Word is more precious than gold or silver. If we delight in the Word, we will find a way to read it, to meditate on it, and even to memorize it.
As we continue our series entitled Get Fit Spiritually, we are reminded of the passage in 1 Timothy 4:6–7 that encourages us to train ourselves for godliness. In other words, it does not come automatically. This is why scripture memorization is considered to be one of the most difficult spiritual disciplines of the Christian life. We may not receive $100 bills for every verse that we memorize, but what is it that we do receive? This morning we discover some wonderful benefits to hiding Gods Word in our hearts!
The Fighter Verses Program is designed to encourage believers to fight the fight of faith through memorizing God’s Word. Each week individuals, families, and churches are all encouraged to memory a verse or short passage of Scripture together. We pray that God would instill your heart with the conviction and yearning to memorize His Word so that it becomes a life-long practice.
