The Apostle Paul wrote in Galatians 6:14, “But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” Of course, when Paul wrote those words he was not just referring of any cross, but he was thinking of the cross upon which the Lord Jesus Christ was crucified.
It seems that we seem images of crosses everywhere: church steeples, necklaces, rings, earrings, and bumper stickers, just to mention a few. One that understands, as Paul, the significance and meaning of the cross, do those that display and wear the symbol of the cross truly understand it’s gruesome, but glorious and victorious message.
As we have come today to Matthew 27:32-44, wanted to send forth a clear message that the cross was and is about much more than the suffering and death of Jesus, it was all part of God’s plan of redemption. This event was no accident, or even the result of a mockery of a trial, it was all part of the fulfillment of God’s eternal plan. 1 Peter 1:20 tells us “…he was chosen before the foundation of the world…” Also, we read in Revelation 13:8—“All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”
So today, as we come to THE CRUCIFIXION, may we see how God has took a symbol of execution and defeat, and used it for the fulfillment of His plan to bring redemption and victory to all that believe.
