There are basically two ways for a person to live his or her life. You can live your life with a passion for yourself and a passion for pleasure, or you can live your life with a passion for God. You can live to please yourself, or you can live to please the Lord.

The Westminster catechism says, ”The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.” This is a passion for God, a fervent desire for God. But people have rewritten that. They have rewritten it to read that the chief end of man is to glorify man and to enjoy himself.

James 4:1 asks, “What is causing the quarrels and fights among you?  Isn’t it the whole army of evil desires at war within you?”  In the next 4 verses, (James 1:2-5) he tells that the very source of our conflict and fighting happens as result of our choosing the pursuit of pleasure, rather than desiring to be totally sold out and faithful to God.

What about you, is your ultimate passion “to glorify God and enjoy Him” above all other pursuits in life?
